Virgo New Moon Ritual August 2022

“We are all like the bright moon. We still have our darker side.” – Khalil Gibran

The lunar cycle can help us take stock of our own lives. Each moon phase, as if different stages of our own goals and intentions, finds us either swelling or melting away. The moon that has often been a sincere companion to humanity’s darkest nights through the millennia and to our most cherished slumbers also has the conviction to speak to our most hidden selves. When it’s out there, it’s the most remarkable thing to observe in the night sky. When it’s hiding, it’s communing with us in a prayer-like stillness.

This new moon falls on August 27, 2022 in the sign of Virgo. Each new moon gives way to a full moon two weeks later (September 10, 2022 in Pisces), and culminates in a full moon in the same zodiac sign six months later (March 6-7, 2023 in Virgo) – completing the original cycle. This allows us a great potent energy cycle to work with. We can work on short-term goals (two weeks) and long-term goals (six months) accordingly.

Just like all new moons, this new moon too is the perfect time to set our intentions and launch new projects. Think of the new moon’s dark sky as planting seeds in the soil. And use the following rituals (or mix and match to create your own) to keep the momentum going.

What You’ll Need:

  1. A candle or a small oil lamp made from clay.
  2. A notebook and pen.
  3. A glass of room temperature water or a cup of herbal tea.
  4. Anything that symbolically makes you feel grounded – a crystal, a bracelet, a chanting bead, a key chain, etc. If you don’t have anything like this, pick up a small stone from your garden or neighbourhood park. Run it under warm and then cold water to cleanse it.
  5. Alarm clock or timer on your phone.

How To Proceed With:

Read these steps till the end before starting the ritual.

  1. Gather the above things on the night of the new moon and set aside 20-30 minutes for the ritual. Tell your loved ones to not interrupt you during this time. You may want to do this under the night sky in the balcony or terrace, or in the comforts of your bedroom. Whichever location you pick will be right for you.

  2. Switch off your phone or put it on airplane mode. Think of this as a cosmic reset. You wouldn’t want to be bothered by notifications or calls during this ritual. This is your sacred time.

  3. Get comfortable in a cross-legged sitting position (if possible) either on the floor with a mat under you or on the bed. If sitting cross-legged is difficult for you, find your own comfortable position. Gather some pillow or cushions for support, if required.

  4. Light the candle or lamp. Place it in front of you at a distance.

  5. Set an alarm for 10 minutes.

  6. Once you’re ready, gently close your eyes and observe your breath.

  7. After a few breaths, place one hand on your heart and the other on your stomach. Continue breathing.

  8. Say a thank you prayer to the moon. “Thank you, moon. You have been a constant companion to humanity’s toughest nights. Even when you aren’t visible to the human eye, you’re there. A constant companion in the darkest of hours. I’m thankful to you.”

  9. Open your eyes. Pick your symbol of groundedness and place it between your hands in a prayer position. Set your intention here.

  10. To set your intention, ask yourself: What do I truly desire? What do I need to plant to see the harvest I desire? Meditate upon the questions till the alarm goes off.

  11. Sip your tea or water, and write down your insights in your notebook for 10 minutes. Don’t forget to write down what you’d like to do in two weeks’ and six weeks’ time frame.

  12. Once you’re done, take a few moments to thank your symbol of groundedness, the moon, and anything else you believe in.

  13. While blowing off the candle, whisper these words: “And it’s done.”

Rituals are simply intention practices. They are a way to honour the process of planting seeds of intention before they harvest.
